No injuries or damages reported during protest action in Sunninghill – police
SUNNINGHILL – The protest action took place outside the Massmart head office in Sunninghill earlier today, 28 January.
A group of protesters gathered outside the Massmart head office in Sunninghill earlier today, 28 January.
Refilwe Boikanyo, the communications manager for Massmart and Walmart, said, “We can confirm that approximately 20 people gathered illegally outside the Massmart Head Office on Monday 28 January 2018.”
Boikanyo said that Massmart had met with the delegation of protesters on four previous occasions, and briefly described that they were ‘challenging a court ruling made in 2012 and which Massmart implemented in full at that time’, however, the Fourways Review is, at present, trying to establish more information on which court ruling is being referred to and what the protesters’ grievances are. When this information is attained, the website will update to inform readers.
Meanwhile, the protest action was also confirmed by Sandton police spokesperson, Captain Granville Meyer. He said, “The situation is under control and being monitored by our local police members, public order police and the JMPD [Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department]. Nobody was injured and no damages were reported during the protest.”
