SMMEs get a chance
JOHANNESBURG – Engagements will stimulate connections between SMMEs in the US and in South Africa.
The City of Johannesburg and the US Consul General Michael McCarthy held a Small Medium and Macro Enterprise (SMME) seminar and networking session on 13 April at the Khoebo Opportunity Centre in Johannesburg.
The aim of the event was for local SMMEs to interact and engage with representatives from various companies from the US on market access opportunities. McCarthy said while living and working in Johannesburg, they have identified rising stars that are role players in the South African economy. He said such engagements will stimulate connections and create contact between SMMEs at the US and in South Africa.
“Government can not always provide jobs and answers but we can provide a path. Small businesses are looking for opportunities and we can provide a path for them to access these opportunities,” he said.
The opportunity centre was the first to be launched by the City of Johannesburg to help inspire the growth of SMMEs to create jobs and to grow the economy by five per cent come 2021. McCarthy said they are working with government at the provincial and municipal level on similar programmes.
