Sunninghill makes big plans for a Youth Day summit

SUNNINGHILL – City departments and various stakeholders came together in a meeting to plan the upcoming Youth Day Summit set to take place on June 16.

Various members of the Metro police, Sandton police, and other stakeholders came together for a meeting held at the Sunninghill Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Top of the agenda was the planning of a Youth Day summit scheduled to take place on 16 June from 9am to 2pm at Sunninghill’s Seventh-day Adventist Church, aimed at commemorating the 1976 Soweto uprising when students protested against the Bantu Education Act.

Angie Makwetla from the South African Human Rights Commission was present at the meeting. Makwetla stressed the importance of having the youth attend the summit. “This will mobilise the youth. We do not want anyone feeling helpless. Young people should come together and unite and this will be beneficial for them, and it can enhance their future as well.”

A number of City departments, businesses and non-profit organisations are on board to ensure the event is a success.

Secretary of Sector 4 CPF Youth Desk Karabo Mosoeunyane said, “On the day we will have a lot of interesting activities taking place. The youth will get to engage with a lot of people and network, so I’d like to encourage them to come in numbers.”

Some of the activities planned include an address by officers on the issue of substance abuse, protective behaviour programmes and the role of youth in fighting crime.
