Reckless drivers to face jail time
FOURWAYS – Motorists caught driving recklessly will face jail time, with hotspots identified around Johannesburg following disturbing video on Witkoppen Road.
A recent video of a taxi driving on the pavement of Witkoppen Road in Fourways has left pedestrians frustrated.
In the video, a white Siyaya taxi can be seen driving on the pavement in order to beat traffic.
Johannesburg MMC for Public Safety Michael Sun said that such driving will not be tolerated in Joburg any longer.
“First of all, we have identified the hotspots around Joburg where taxis are driving towards oncoming traffic or driving on the pavement. This is extremely dangerous and it can cause major accidents, and we will definitely deploy JMPD officials to the identified hotspots.
“Any taxi driver or motorist caught conducting themselves in such a manner on the roads might be arrested and will be dealt with according to the court process.”
Motorists and pedestrians who come across bad driving on the road can report it to the Buya Mthetho WhatsApp hotline 081 410 6338. Evidence can be submitted in the form of videos or images.
Those who have submitted evidence of a reckless act will have to testify against the charged driver in a court of law. Whistle-blowers will remain anonymous until the process gets to court.
