ICYMI: Sunnghill Striders runs 90km during Comrades week, culminating inRace the Comrades Legends run

SUNNINGHILL – As a club, the Sunninghill Striders ran over 6 000km.

Sunninghill Striders challenged its members to each run 90km over a period of seven days.

This was from 8 to 14 June and coincided with the virtual Race the Comrades Legends run on the final day.”As a club, we ran a total of 6 018km during Comrades week, with 38 club members completing the 90km club challenge,” said club chairperson, Lisa Teepe

“Smunda Mokoena ran an incredible total of 138.8km and Roger Buck a total of 113.9km.

“With races being cancelled for the foreseeable future, we’re having to adapt as runners and clubs, and find innovative ways to stay motivated to run.”

She said virtual races were good for this but the club needed to have its own challenges to keep its members connected, even though they could not run together.”This has made such a difference to the spirit in the club, and has encouraged people to run no matter the distance,” Teepe added.

“As a committee, and with the help of other club members, we are working on a couple more challenges to get us through the next few months, and keep us on the road.”

The Race the Comrades Legends event saw people all over South Africa run five, 10, 21, 45 and 90km for real medals on 14 June, in lieu of the postponed Comrades Marathon.

The virtual run allowed people to upload their own times online and compare their results with the likes of Bruce Fordyce, Frith van der Merwe and Samuel Tshabalala.
