Community members have raised concerns about drag racing resulting in loud noise on Van der Bijl Avenue and Maxwell Drive in Sunninghill.
Sunninghill resident Dimitrios Koutakis said the noise had been a concern for a number of years with it having no set time in the day when it takes place.
“I am not able to comment on the speed matters, only on the noise. I have lived in the Sunninghill area for over 25 years and have never seen any significant traffic policing on the K69,” he claimed.
“This subject has been raised by the undersigned and many citizens who live adjacent to the K69 at Sunninghill community level over the years, to no avail, hence this written appeal for action.”
Koutakis reached out to interim Ward 93 councillor Sean Kreusch for assistance in the matter.
Kreusch said he had notified the High-Speed Unit of the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) of the noise that was possibly related to speeding in the area.
“The issue of noise seems to be a long-standing one from my engagement with the community and involves daytime speeding and night-time drag racing. Even whilst in a lockdown,” he said.
“We are requesting that private security companies patrol the areas and take evidence and call SAPS. I encourage residents to call their security companies and get them to intervene,” Kreusch told the Fourways Review in hopes that the High-Speed Unit could patrol along the road since there had been some success in Ward 94.
Spokesperson of the JMPD Xolani Fihla confirmed that a complaint had been lodged with the High Speed Unit. “The response is that the Speed Unit cannot assist at the present moment because we don’t have a service provider to assist us with equipment due to contractual obligations.
Fihla added, “But the councillor can contact JMPD Region E Operations to assist with visibility at the said location at the times drag racing is conducted.”
