UPDATE: Two male inmates arrested for house robbery and kidnapping

BEVERLEY – The Department of Correctional Services is investigating a gross security breach after two inmates escaped from Leeuwkop Correctional Centre.

Metro police have confirmed that two male suspects were arrested for house robbery and kidnapping on September 9.

Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said the arrest was made after police spotted a white Toyota double cab driving at a high speed which then drove into a ditch at R511 and Plum Street. Minnaar said, “The two suspects were arrested and detained at Diepsloot Police Station. Officers discovered that the two male suspects had escaped from Leeuwkop prison, where they were serving sentences of 10 years and 30 years for murders which they committed.”

He added, “After escaping [from the prison], the suspects went to a house in Fourways, entering the property from [the back]. A domestic worker saw them from inside and locked the back door. It is alleged that the suspects kicked the door down, as well as a second door inside the house. They took money from the lady of the house and kidnapped her daughter aged four and half months.”

Spokesperson for the Department of Correction Services Singabakho Nxumalo said the department has opened an investigation of a ‘gross security breach’ after the inmates’ escape from Leeuwkop Correctional Centre on September 9. “[The two inmates] have since been charged for kidnapping a child, hijacking a motor vehicle and escape from lawful custody. Although the two inmates are back in custody, DCS is seriously disturbed by the incident and will ensure that the investigation leaves no stone unturned,” he said.

Nxumalo concluded, “The law will take its course in dealing with the two inmates and DCS will be working closely with SAPS to ensure that justice prevails for the victims who were tormented by these two whilst on the loose.”
