Men in Heels takes breast cancer awareness to new heights
FOURWAYS – According to Herbst, South Africa is known as the country with the highest incidents of male breast cancer.
Men from different parts of the province showed their commitment to fighting breast cancer by walking 300m around a Fourways shopping centre wearing women’s high heel shoes and pink T-shirts.
Participants gathered at Cedar Square Shopping Centre on October 16 to take part in a Men in Heels walkathon.

The event was organised by the Gauteng based non-profit organisation, Rakgadi Foundation, in partnership with Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) to raise awareness about men’s breast cancer and encourage men to get tested for the disease.
Semali Moeti of Rakgadi Foundation said breast cancer awareness among men had not been emphasised enough and afforded the same attention as in women.

“We are here to raise breast cancer awareness particularly amongst men. We know that awareness in men is limited, although breast cancer affects at least 1% of men. We find that the mortality rate is far higher in men because of limited awareness,” Moeti said.
Professor Michael Herbst (77) of Cansa who also participated in the walk, said South Africa was known as the country with the highest incidents of male breast cancer.
“The latest statistics shows that 30 women and one man in South Africa are diagnosed with breast cancer every day. Stats also reveal that more men than women die because of breast cancer. We as a country have a huge responsibility to raise awareness and educate men about breast cancer,” Herbst concluded.
