Local athlete and resident of Sunninghill, Pieter Du Preez crowned 2021Oita International Wheelchair Marathon champion

SUNNINGHILL– Du Preez thanked residents of Sunninghill, his family and sponsors for their support and described as 2021 as successful year.


Resident of Sunninghill and 2020 Tokyo Paralympics Games gold medallist, Pieter du Preez has once again flown the South African flag high after he scooped first position in the 40th Oita International Wheelchair Marathon.

Du Preez participated in this year’s marathon on November 21 in Japan and was crowned champion for the fifth consecutive time.

“I am happy to be back in Japan after a fantastic performance a few months ago when I participated in the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics and won a gold medal in the in the Men’s H1 cycling time trial. This is my fifth consecutive Oita International Wheelchair Marathon victory and I am extremely happy with my performance time of 2:34 min,” he said.

Du Preez thanked the residents of Sunninghill, his family and sponsors for their support and described the year as a successful one.

“It was a great event with a group of 30 participants participating in the marathon due to Covid-19. I could not have done it without the support from my family and community members of Sunninghill who rallied behind me, what a privilege to live in such a great community. I would also like to thank the National Lotteries Commission for all the support.”
