Suspect found in possession of stolen property at his shack in Diepsloot Ext 2

DIEPSLOOT– Police spokesperson said the suspect allegedly went on a shopping spree soon after committing the crime to purchase alcohol at a local tavern using victim's bank card.

Diepsloot police arrested a 30-year-old male smash-and-grab suspect on February 25 in Diepsloot.

It is alleged that the suspect broke into the victim’s car on February 21, on the corner of the R511 and R562 and stole a laptop, handbag and a cellphone charger.

Police spokesperson Captain Tinyiko Mathebula said the suspect allegedly went on a shopping spree soon after committing the crime to purchase alcohol at a local tavern using the victim’s bank card.

Mathebula said following investigations by the detective responsible for the case, the suspect was traced down and arrested at his address.

“A search was conducted at the suspect’s shack and items presumably belonging to the victim were found in his possession. The victim was summoned to the station and she positively identified her items.”

The suspect was arrested and charged with theft out of a motor vehicle and possession of stolen property, and briefly appeared in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on February 28.
