Safe-Hub Diepsloot hosted their annual Freedom Day tournament on April 27. Safe-Hub holds these annual tournaments on every public holiday.

The children had the opportunity to learn something new while also having fun.

The participants of this tournament were boys under12 from the community of Diepsloot. They were taught a series of things about Freedom Day including the meaning of the colours of the South African flag and they were also taught about freedom fighters and the transition and evolution of IDs from the past to today.

“Our learning components were all about Freedom Day, why we celebrate it and what it means to us”, said Siphokazi Ndlangalavu, the programme manager of the event.

Ndlangalavu feels that teaching children about freedom is an important value. “Understanding freedom includes understanding our personal boundaries in relation to others”, she added.

Safe-Hub is a sporting facility that is open to all the community members of Diepsloot and is located in Muzomuhle Primary School and often hosts tournaments such as these.

After all the lessons, the children played off against each other in a game of football. The tournament was attended by 24 different teams.

In the end, it was the Orlando Pirates team that won the Safe-Hub cup.
