A 33-year-old man was sentenced to three years imprisonment by the Randburg Magistrates’ Court on May 6 after he was found guilty of a business burglary.
Diepsloot police spokesperson Captain Tinyiko Mathebula said, “Nhlanhla Kgatla was allegedly caught by community members on the church premises. The suspect then took the police to where he allegedly had hidden stolen items from the church. Boxes of toilet paper and A4 Typek paper stolen from the church were found hidden in nearby bushes,”
Mathebula said the suspect was subsequently arrested on February 22 and charged with business burglary.
“Upon receiving the docket for further investigation, Constable Costa Ramuhala made sure that he build a watertight case to achieve a successful conviction. Ramuhala then obtained statements from eyewitnesses and collected forensic evidence and his efforts were rewarded when the court slapped the accused with three years’ direct imprisonment.”
Mathebula commended community members for not taking the law into their hands after catching the suspect.
“We call upon community members to partner with the police in the fight against crime. Crime can be reported anonymously on Crime Stop 08600 10111 or send a tip-off on MySAPS App which is downloadable on any smartphone.”
