JMPD confiscates tools and stops illegal erection of advertising billboard along William Nicol Drive

A JMPD spokesperson said perpetrators can be fined or sentenced to 20 years imprisonment for erecting illegal billboards.

Ward 94 councillor David Foley said the mushrooming of illegal billboards in and around Fourways was a major concern.

He also warned those behind this illegal and criminal activity to stop doing so.

This was after Foley and members of the community stopped the erection of a giant illegal billboard along William Nicol Drive.

Employees of an unknown company dug this hole to erect an illegal billboard along William Nicol Drive.

Foley invited members of the community to join him in closing a big hole which was dug by people who were employed by an unknown company to erect a billboard.

He said, “I was on my way from a CPF meeting when I saw people digging on this site. I stopped and asked to produce a written permit to dig on municipal land but they couldn’t. I called JMPD which responded quickly and confiscated the tools that they were using.”

Residents join Ward 94 councillor David Foley to stop the erection of illegal billboards.

Foley said a week later the hole was dug once again and he decided to call on residents to come help him close it.

“The hole was big and it took us three hours to fill it up. I call upon members of the community to report any suspicious illegal signs in their respective areas.”

JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said a person who contravenes municipal outdoor advertising by-laws can be fined or sentenced up to 20 years imprisonment.

“Upon conviction, a person can be liable to a fine or imprisonment not exceeding 20 years or to both a fine and such imprisonment and the fine shall be calculated according to the ratio determined for such imprisonment in terms of the Adjustment of Fines Act.”
