Fourways resident wins WBC Bridgeweight silver title
Fourways resident Kevin Lerena won the WBC Bridgeweight silver title against Ryad Merhy at Emperors Palace on Saturday.
A Fourways boxer has won the WBC Bridgeweight silver title. Kevin ‘Two Guns’ Lerena (31) beat Cote D’Ivoire’s Ryad Merhy to win the WBC Bridgeweight silver title and automatically became the number one contender for the WBC Bridgerweight world title after he earned a unanimous points victory at Emperors Palace.

Lerena made his professional debut against Justice Siliga in November 2011 and has come a long way to be the number one contender in his class. Lerena comes back from a loss to Daniel Dubois in December but that did not stop him from coming out victorious at Emperors Palace.

With a new title under his belt, the International Boxing Organisation Cruiserweight World Champion will now set his sights on the WBC Bridgerweight World Championship. Lerena now stands a chance to join the ranks of legends Thulani ‘Sugar Boy’ Malinga, and Dingaan Thobela, the two South African boxers who became champions in the WBC division.

Lerena had an advantage on judges’ scorecards after eight rounds and then solidified his lead in the ninth. Judges Eddie Pappoe, Thabo Spampool, and Judge Daniel van der Welie scored the match 118-110, 116-112, and 115-113 respectively.

Lerena will now focus on bigger and brighter things as he has improved his record to 29-2; 14 and become the number one contender for Polish Lukasz Rozanski’s WBC Bridgerweight championship title.
