Crime stats paint bleak picture

According to the quarterly crime statistics released by Police Minister General Bheki Cele, Douglasdale Police Station has seen an increase in rape and murder cases and a 2.5% decrease in contact crimes as a whole from January 1 to March 31 2023.

According to the quarterly crime statistics released by Police Minister General Bheki Cele, Douglasdale Police Station has seen an increase in rape and murder cases and a 2.5% decrease in contact crimes as a whole from January 1 to March 31 2023.

Contact crimes include murder, attempted murder, sexual offences, assault, and robbery. Contact-related crimes (arson and malicious damage to property) decreased by 16.7% after recording 55 cases compared to last year’s 66 cases.
However, the total crime detected as a result of police action, which includes drug-related crimes, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs has seen a 30.6% increase with more than 47 cases compared to last year’s 36 cases.

This quarter, 259 property-related crimes were recorded compared to 271 incidents last year in the same quarter. Property-related crimes include burglary, theft of motor vehicles and motorcycles, theft out of or from motor vehicles, and stock theft.

The Douglasdale Police Station has had 17 community-reported serious crimes in this quarter, with a 13.4% increase in other serious crimes such as shoplifting, commercial crime, and all theft not mentioned elsewhere.
