In a heartwarming celebration of creativity and compassion, Reflection Pizza Bar, located in the Broadacres Shopping Centre, hosted a successful World Granny Square Day event. The occasion also aimed to raise awareness for the remarkable 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela initiative.
World Granny Square Day is an event that brings together knitting enthusiasts and crafters and allows them to share their love for the iconic granny square. The event serves as a platform to showcase the versatility and beauty of this classic crochet pattern.
At Reflection Pizza Bar, the cheerful atmosphere was infused with vibrant colours and a sense of communal joy. Knitters, both experienced and beginners, gathered to participate in the creation of beautiful granny squares. The event provided an opportunity for individuals to connect, exchange tips and techniques, and foster a sense of camaraderie.

The event’s primary purpose was to create awareness for the extraordinary initiative known as 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela. This organisation, founded in South Africa by Carolyn Steyn, aims to honour the legacy of the late Nelson Mandela by providing warmth and comfort to those in need through the creation of handmade blankets.
Lisa Mancer ambassador for 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela said, “We are celebrating World Granny Square Day, we are also creating awareness for 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela. Granny’s Square is just one style of crotchet that goes to our blankets. Our motto is keeping the variable warm.”
Mancer believes that they are knitting broken people’s lives together.
Participants were encouraged to contribute their knitting squares towards the creation of blankets for the initiative. The goal was not only to create a substantial number of blankets but also to symbolise the unity and love that can be achieved when people come together for a common cause.

An attendee Mandy Meisel said, “What motivated me to be part of the event, was just to meet new people that share the same interest as I do and to be able to make something that I can pass on to somebody else that needs it. I enjoy what I am doing especially since I know it will fill a need for somebody else.”
Throughout the day, the sound of laughter and conversation filled the air as participants shared stories, techniques, and their passion for knitting. Ambassadors from 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela were present to provide guidance and information about the organisation’s mission and inspire attendees to become part of this meaningful endeavour.
By the end of the event, a remarkable total of 67 blankets had been completed, surpassing the initial target. The collective efforts demonstrated the power of community and the ability to make a difference in the lives of others through acts of kindness and compassion.
