Construction women win big at prestigious awards

Women who make big-boss moves in construction get their flowers at an award ceremony.

“They have crossed deeper valleys rising and climbing mountains and reminded us that indeed the future is female.” These are the words of the Minister of Public Works, Sihle Zikalala, to celebrate women in construction during an award ceremony hosted by the Construction Industry Development Board at Indaba Hotel on August 24.

The Empowerment and Recognition of Women in Construction awards are celebrated annually. Zikalala said he was delighted to be part of the celebration that recognises remarkable women in construction, especially in Women’s Month.

Families and nominees of the prestigious awards are in attendance at the Indaba Hotel.

“These women are the pride of the construction industry and role models to many women and their success is something for others to see and multiply. We applaud our entity, the Construction Industry Development Board, for the awards initiative which has the potential to lead the industry on
gender-transformation empowerment and to encourage relevant conversation to take place in the industry since the inception of the awards.”

The awards cover a diverse range of categories, from honouring women mentors and women-led projects to recognising youth ownership among women in construction.

One of the winners, Sonto Sikhakhane, who bagged the Project Delivery Excellence of the Year award, said that she was happy to have her work recognised.

“I have managed to mentor other young women because this is my passion. I am a civil engineer by profession. I am so grateful to have won this award because it means a lot to me and my career. It shows that hard work pays off and I wish other women could see that.”
