Johannesburg Floral Art Club prepares for African Christmas with lavish designs
Visitors from the outside wanted to also learn how to design using flowers.
Residence of Fourways belonging to the Johannesburg Floral Art Club hosted a Christmas meeting where they discussed their plans for 2024 and showed their designs were critiqued to help them better their skills. The club gathered at the Ferndale Recreation Centre with members showing up in style and displaying their designs.
According to the treasurer, Rosemary Attwell, who was sitting in for the chairperson, the club was well known when people still valued agricultural shows. “This initiative is not only fun but it also helps our local gardeners because we buy flowers from them and turn them into beautiful pieces of art,” she said. The theme of the designs was African Christmas and the members delivered.
With critique from Robyn Jelley and Winkie Marais, they gave the best design title to Attwell. “All I did was dismantle my own Christmas tree and make a design from all the pieces I got. I am so glad it turned out this way,” Attwell said. She further elaborated on how therapeutic designing is. “I feel so recharged when I gather with my group. It is always fun and I would encourage more people to just take some time off and do what they love. I love designing flowers in my spare time and that helps me with my creative side,” Attwell added. She encourages people to join the club.
Meanwhile, other members could not stop talking about their designs and how they would love to improve. Eva Figueira’s design was also on display, and she described it as too much. “There is a lot going on but it’s how I view Christmas,” she said. Dainfern Ridge resident, Rosy Allaway designed an African Christmas tree that scored 85% from the judges. She was so happy and hoped to get a 90% on her next design.
A few of the members gave illustrations on how they design using flowers and when to use different flowers. Towards the end of the event, Atwell showed the members cards made of recycled material. “We are keen on using environmentally friendly items and products,” she added.
