Douglasdale stakeholders launch 16 Days of Activism

The campaign will run until December 10.

The Douglasdale CPF along with other stakeholders launched their 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence campaign themed ‘Accelerating action to end gender-based violence and femicide’.

The launch was held on November 24 and warmed the community’s hearts. Residents came out in numbers to support the initiative. The event was opened in prayer by Pastor Pontso of the CRC Church with welcoming remarks by the Douglasdale CPF exco chairperson Lizzy Mabena.

The launch was a success with a few members of the community coming along with the stakeholders to their tents for a better understanding of the campaign.

“Over the next 16 days, we will unite as a community, amplifying the voices of survivors, and calling for an end to all forms of violence and discrimination,” said Mabena. “This annual campaign serves as a reminder that every single person has a role to play in creating a South Africa free from gender-based violence. Together, let us challenge harmful norms, break down barriers, and foster an environment where everyone can thrive without fear. Whether you are an activist, advocate, survivor, or ally, your presence in this fight is invaluable and your commitment to this cause is commendable.”

Members of the community engaged with the officials and hope to make this campaign a success.

During the 16 Days of Activism, the Douglasdale CPF wants to educate, inspire, and empower one another through preventative campaigns, information sharing, discussions, and other initiatives such as door-to-door missions. “It is through these collective efforts that we will raise awareness, promote dialogue, and drive meaningful change,” said Mabena.

The Douglasdale CPF exco chairperson Lizzy Mabena welcomed and thanked everyone for making it to the launch of the campaign.

A member of the Douglasdale SAPS, Warrant Officer Nicholas Mokwena explained the purpose of the event before embarking on the door-to-door initiative. Stakeholders that were part of the programme for the day included, the City of Johannesburg’s Department of Social Development, GBV and F Brigades, NCVT (The National Children and Violence Trust), The South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (Sanca), Lonwabo Security Services, Obed Security Services, and local NGO Vukuzenzele.
