Local gymnast celebrates top honour

Local Gymnast Gabby-Leigh Tapson shines at SA Gym Games, claiming first place title.

Meet Gabby-Leigh Tapson (16), a remarkable gymnast whose journey in the sport has been inspired by many.
Gabby-Leigh began her gymnastics career at the tender age of six after being captivated by the sport during the 2012 Olympics.

“I have always been a very active and busy person since I was little, I don’t remember much but I was always doing something with my hands and upside down” she recalled, explaining how she was drawn to gymnastics at an early age.

Following her first tryout, she quickly fell in love with the discipline. Since then, Gabby-Leigh has achieved incredible milestones that speak to her dedication and hard work.

Among her proudest accomplishments were being crowned National Champion for two consecutive years and defending her title as Gauteng Champion twice. “In gymnastics, you’re constantly learning new skills and pushing your limits. Winning those titles is just one of many highlights of my journey.”

The supportive environment at Junxion Gymnastics, where she trains, has played a pivotal role in her success. “I must thank all of my amazing coaches at Junxion for always encouraging me to be the best gymnast I can be.
“Junxion is more than a gym; it’s a family I’m proud to be part of.” She also credits her parents for being unwavering supporters of her dreams and ambitions.

“What motivates me the most is the progress and improvement that I see from my hard work. Gymnastics has helped me develop strength, confidence, discipline, and resilience.”

Recently, Gabby-Leigh participated in the SA Gym Games, a competition she described as an opportunity to showcase her hard work in a thrilling environment, competing against athletes from different provinces. She claimed first place.

“There’s no better feeling than seeing your hard work pay off. When I won, I felt a wave of gratitude and excitement wash over me. One of the best feelings was seeing how proud my parents and coaches were.”

Her coaches have played a crucial role in her preparations, customising her routines to best fit her strengths and always encouraging her to push her limits. “They make sure I am ready for anything and never let me feel like I cannot do something.”

For aspiring gymnasts or anyone hesitant to start a new venture, Gabby-Leigh shared her motivational message. “Flip your fears, twist your doubts, and land on confidence. Gymnastics is so much more than just a sport; it teaches invaluable life lessons.”

She believes that if an individual has a passion for gymnastics in their heart, they are never too old or young to start, provided they’re willing to work hard and have fun.
