JDA and Pikitup collaborate to keep Johannesburg clean

Johannesburg can look forward to a cleaner city as the JDA and Pikitup team up to improve waste management services.

The City of Johannesburg has announced its multi-million rand investment in a collaborative effort between Pikitup and the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) to enhance the city’s waste management infrastructure.

In a statement, the city reiterated its commitment to not only keeping Johannesburg cleaner, but also to making it easier for residents to dispose of their waste responsibly. “These waste management projects are key to ensuring a cleaner, more efficient Johannesburg,“ said JDA CEO Themba Mathibe.

While Pikitup currently operates two waste depots, 44 garden refuse sites, and four active landfill sites, planned and ongoing programmes will increase the waste management service provider’s capacity and help the city reach its: ‘Growth and environmental goals’.

Ongoing projects include,

  • Linbro landfill: the landfill site is receiving several upgrades, including a designated area for waste reclaimers, a waste sorting facility, storm water systems, as well as access roads.
  • Marie Louis landfill: The landfill is getting a security upgrade in the form of a concrete boundary wall.
  • Ennerdale landfill: Similarly to the Marie Louis landfill, the Ennerdale landfill will also have a new boundary wall to increase security.
  • The Zondi depot will also have a new boundary wall to not only protect the depot but also increase safety for Pikitup offices and its employees.
  • Goudkoppies landfill, which is in its second phase of being rehabilitated, will receive a new pumping system. A temporary leachate pond will also be built at the landfill.
  • At the Rabie Ridge depot, a boundary wall, storm water drains, and sewerage infrastructure are being constructed.
