Spinal cord injury patient regains the will to live
A tragic workplace accident changed everything for Mgarivali Shiburi, but his story didn’t end there, because he was determined to fight back, and reclaim his life.
After a devastating workplace accident left Mgarivali Shiburi with life-altering injuries, the prediction was serious. He was told he’d never walk again. But where others saw limits, Shiburi chose to see possibility.
Now, after months of intense effort, personal grit, and the support of Life Riverfield Lodge Rehabilitation dedicated rehabilitation team, Shiburi is defying the odds and preparing to take his first steps out of the facility and into a new chapter of life.
“My life was great,” he shared. “I already had plans for the year and I had already started achieving the few goals I had set for myself. The injury has affected me in so many ways. It felt as if my world was closing down on me. I had lost the will to live.”

On that day, Shiburi said a gate at his workplace fall on his back, which left him with an injury on his spinal cord. It is something he will never forget. “When I was told I might never walk again, it really broke my heart. Thinking of my kids and their needs. Thoughts of living my life in a wheelchair was unbearable. Then, the moment I was told about rehabilitation, it felt like they were telling me that I still have a chance to fight for my normal life. So, I took that as a motivation. That’s how I got the strength to persevere.”
Shiburi has a lot to be grateful for, especially the way he was treated at the hospital. He said everyone has played a big role in his progress. “The nurses took very good care of me in making sure I felt comfortable and making sure I had whatever I needed. The doctor checked on me on a daily basis and made sure I had all the medication I needed. The physiotherapy and the occupational therapy pushed me, always encouraging me to hit the gym.”

He said he’s now walking out of the healthcare facility with renewed hope, ready to reclaim his life and pursue the goals he’s set for himself. “I would like to say to anyone who is faced with a similar challenge. Keep your head up, and don’t give up. At times it might feel pointless to fight, as you might not see the results at first, but trust me, every time you put in effort, the results start building up. You just need to keep pushing until they become visible.
“I really hope that my story inspires others into believing that there’s still life after every setback. As long as you are still alive, you can always get your life back. I believe I’ve already got most of my life back. I’m using a walker now, but I believe in the near future I won’t be needing it.”
