Riversands resident wants to give township children a fighting chance
Former professional boxer Mbulelo 'Poison' Transvaal is appealing for donations to support a new community initiative aimed at keeping township children active, engaged, and away from illegal activities through sport and play.
Resident and former professional boxer Mbulelo ‘Poison’ Transvaal said the story of a township child is a unique one, vastly different from that of children raised in suburban, middle-class, or affluent communities.
“For many township children, daily life is shaped by limited resources, few recreational activities, and a shortage of safe, stimulating spaces that support healthy growth and holistic development.
“This reality is visible not only in communities, but also in the schools that serve them. While these challenges are often acknowledged, change has to begin from within the community itself. “This is not about blaming the system or government. There are things we can do ourselves, as communities, to improve the lives of our children.”

Transvaal currently resides in Riverside, near Riversands, not far from Dainfern and Steyn City, where many families live in RDP flats. He says the high concentration of children in small living spaces highlights an urgent need for structured, fun, and educational activities that promote physical health, discipline, and positive social engagement.
“Many children are living in a very small space, and they need healthy ways to stay occupied and entertained. If children are not engaged, they end up finding other ways to occupy themselves, and sometimes that leads to illegal activities.”

A former professional boxer, accredited personal fitness trainer, and boxing trainer, Transvaal has already begun making a difference with the limited equipment he has.
Using skipping ropes and basic fitness routines, he has started informal sessions aimed at keeping children active and focused. “I am a sportsman, and even with very little equipment, you can already see how much children enjoy being active. With more support, we can do so much more.”

To expand his efforts, Transvaal is appealing to the public for donations of unused or pre-loved children’s recreational items.
These include toys, sports and games equipment, skateboards, old bicycles, cricket equipment, tennis rackets, and any other child-friendly items that can help create positive play opportunities.
“These items may seem small to some people, but they can make a huge difference in a child’s life.”
Transvaal is also in the process of registering his non-profit, a foundation called What’s Missing in a Child’s Life? The initiative is inspired by his personal journey, his love for children, and his belief that every child, regardless of where they are born, deserves the opportunity to play, learn, and grow in a safe and supportive environment.
Transvaal is also calling on partners for this project. If you wish to do anything to help or support children, you can partner with him.
