Ark Academy appeals for support to complete their permanent home in Diepsloot
With their previous space no longer available, the Diepsloot early childhood development centre is urgently building a permanent home to ensure stability and safety for its young learners.
Ark Academy, an early childhood development (ECD) centre based in Diepsloot, has launched an urgent appeal for support as it works to build a permanent home for its young learners after losing access to its previous premises.
Mochaki Mothapo, the school principal, explained that Ark Academy is focused on providing a safe, structured, and nurturing environment for young children during their most important developmental years. “Many of the children we serve come from vulnerable backgrounds and rely on having a consistent space for learning, care, and routine.

“We cater for children from baby and toddler age through to preschool. As of the end of last year, Ark Academy had 48 learners enrolled, and a further 54 children in aftercare. These numbers are expected to increase once the new site is completed and fully operational.”
The need to relocate arose after the private individual who had made the previous space available requested it back due to changes in their circumstances. “This situation forced us to urgently seek an alternative solution. For young children, stability is critical, and the uncertainty around space affects learners, parents, and staff alike.”

The disruption also placed pressure on the school’s operations. “We had to shift our focus from day-to-day learning and development toward urgent planning and fundraising.”
To ensure families are not displaced, Ark Academy secured land in Diepsloot, approximately 100m from its current location, with support from the local ward councillor.

The land was initially overgrown and being used as an informal dumping site. “We cleared the site, fenced it off to prevent further dumping, and began preparing the foundation.”
Construction is now underway, with foundation work completed and the first walls going up. Windows and doors have also been secured. To reduce costs and build sustainably, the school is using EcoBricks, many of which have been donated through partnerships with schools and community organisations.
To fund the next phase of construction, Ark Academy has launched a BackaBuddy campaign to raise R75,000. “These funds will be used for essential building materials and labour to complete the current classroom. If we raise more, it will help us build additional classrooms and establish a vegetable garden to support families and long-term sustainability.”
Mothapo is urging the public, businesses, and organisations to assist through donations, building materials, EcoBricks, volunteering, and skills-based support.
