Waterstone College head of high school sport, Kayla dos Santos, shared her thoughts on coaching and mentorship for school athletes.
On coaching, Dos Santos said: “My coaching philosophy is athlete-centred, focusing on character development rather than just season and short-term results. I prioritise creating a positive, inclusive environment where young athletes can build skills and confidence while developing their abilities. I want athletes to become truly obsessed with the sport, not just playing it, but loving it and, most importantly, understanding it.”

Dos Santos’ five-point plan:
• Age-appropriate training
• Game-based learning
• Strong emphasis on teamwork and effort
• Athlete growth
“At Waterstone College, we help young athletes understand the value of aligning sport, academics, and personal goals by showing how each supports their long-term success. My goal is to develop well-rounded individuals who are passionate about their sport but also prepared for life beyond it. I am where I am today because of sport, and I share my story with athletes all the time to motivate them,” said Dos Santos.

On mentorship and advice for athletes, Dos Santos explained her philosophy:
“A massive part of athlete’s growth starts with attitude towards the sport, coaches, and teammates. Athletes must always be respectful, arrive on time for training, listen when the coaches speak, correct mistakes, and capture each moment. Shape a path and run with it, no matter the obstacles. Have confidence in your abilities, believe in your goals, and never let anyone stand in the way of where you’re meant to be.”
Key points for athletes:
• Stand out
• Be humble
• Hard work and discipline
• Balance sport and life
• Set clear goals
Dos Santos’ go-to quote for athletes is by Ralph Waldo Emerson: “The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be.”
