JRA completes first phase of Chartwell Road maintenance

Residents welcome long-awaited grading of Runnymead Road, while further repairs are still needed.

Ward 96 councillor Rufas Maswazi has welcomed the commencement of phase 1 road maintenance in Chartwell.

Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) recently completed maintenance work on Runnymead Road, bringing relief to Chartwell residents and the surrounding areas. Maswazi described it as a long-awaited breakthrough for residents who have been calling for intervention for months.

Although the work forms part of routine annual maintenance, residents say the improvements have made an immediate difference. The Chartwell Board and Runnymead residents expressed their appreciation following the repairs.

“A huge thank you from the Chartwell Board and residents of Runnymead,” the board said. “We have so many people calling to say thank you for fixing Runnymead Road. I know it’s only phase 1, but it is fantastic.”

Maswazi said phase 2 of the maintenance programme is expected to follow once technical delays are resolved. “I am told one of the machines broke. As soon as it’s back, they will continue.”

While he was unable to confirm the total budget allocated for the project, Maswazi said he was pleased to finally see progress. “On behalf of the community, I am excited and relieved at the same time. It’s been a while since the community has been calling for help.”

Residents have also noticed additional work being carried out in nearby sections. Resident Rosalee Nel said crews have been working near the lower section of the road.

“They’ve been working on the bottom road, near the Castle, bringing this old road surface in. Also had some guys collecting all the rubbish, not sure who organised that, but they were super nice. Things are looking up.”

However, not all infrastructure concerns have been resolved. Residents report that Rietvallei Road, heading west, and Watercombe Road remain in poor condition, with potholes stretching along the full length of the roads.
