Spur restaurant gives back to Dainfern community through Cansa initiative

Fern River Spur donated a portion of its sales to the Cansa shavathon fundraiser to showcase its commitment to supporting families and community initiatives in Dainfern.

Fern River Spur in Dainfern is already making its mark in the community by supporting local initiatives and charitable causes.

According to the restaurant’s John Fuller, the restaurant opened just five months ago in Dainfern Square and has been focused on becoming part of the local community since day one. “We enjoy becoming part of our community and supporting local initiatives. We are owned by the Brinspur Group, which operates 42 restaurants, so we are able to make a meaningful impact.”

The restaurant recently partnered with the Dainfern Golf Estate Cansa shavathon to help raise funds for cancer support initiatives. As part of the collaboration, anyone who participated in the fun run or had their hair sprayed during the shavathon had 10% of their bill donated to the fundraiser when they visited Fern River Spur on the day.

Fuller said the initiative was close to the brand’s values as a family-focused restaurant. “Cancer has touched so many families, and as a family-focused restaurant brand, we really care about families and the community.”

He said thanks to support from the community, the restaurant contributed almost R4 000 towards the Cansa fundraiser. Fuller added that Spur has long been involved in community and national initiatives aimed at supporting children and families. These include partnerships with organisations such as the Smile Foundation and the Spur Full Tummy Fund. He said through the Full Tummy Fund, R1 from every Spur Kids Burger sold is donated to nutrition programmes at under-resourced early childhood development centres. The initiative provided meals to more than a million young South African children last year.

Spur restaurants also run fundraising activities for local schools, including the popular Shadow Shift initiative. During these events, learners and teachers visit the restaurant to shadow waiters and help serve their families and friends for the evening. A portion of the sales from the school’s guests is then donated back to the school. “It’s a great night out and a wonderful way to raise funds together.”

The restaurant was introduced to the Dainfern community through Tilani Edwards, who is involved with the Dainfern Homeowners Association, along with other community members. Fuller said the support has helped the restaurant build relationships within the area and encouraged more partnerships with local initiatives. He added that the restaurant looks forward to continuing to support local initiatives, while providing a welcoming space for families. “We are excited to keep building those relationships by doing what we do best: Serving quality, value-for-money meals in a friendly, vibey atmosphere that’s all about: ‘More than just a meal’.”
