Shaving for a cause at St Peter’s College

St Peter’s College students and staff united in a powerful show of compassion and awareness during the 2026 Cansa shavathon.

St Peter’s College participated in the 2026 Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) shavathon, raising an impressive R44 379.

Karen Grobbelaar, organiser of the event at St Peter’s College, said the annual shavathon, a well-known initiative aimed at raising funds and awareness for those affected by cancer, holds deep significance within the school community. For learners and staff alike, it was more than just a fundraising event; it was a meaningful expression of solidarity with individuals and families facing the life-threatening illness.

Grobbelaar highlighted the importance of the initiative. “Participating in the shavathon is deeply meaningful for our school community. It represents our commitment to compassion, service, and standing alongside those who are battling this life-threatening illness. It is a powerful way for our students to move beyond awareness and take meaningful action in support of others.”

Beyond fundraising, the event played a crucial role in raising awareness about cancer within the school. Through open conversations, visible acts of support, and active involvement, learners gained a deeper understanding of the realities faced by those affected by the disease.

Grobbelaar said one of the highlights was the build-up to the event, particularly the creation of posters and awareness campaigns led by students. The enthusiasm carried through to the day itself, where participation levels and energy were high, showcasing a strong sense of community spirit.

With the success of this year’s campaign, there are already strong intentions for St Peter’s College to take part in the shavathon again next year, continuing to build on its impact and inspire future acts of kindness and service.
