Young and old KnitWits keep 67 Blankets for Mandela Day kindness alive
Kate Lee Pettey-Tredoux is just beginning her crocheting journey, while Colleen Wilson has spent years perfecting the craft, but both are united by a love for making a difference.
The click of crochet hooks and the chatter of volunteers filled the room at Eagle Falls Spur as people of all ages came together at Fourways Crossing with one goal: To create warmth for those in need.
Among them was Kate Lee Pettey-Tredoux, one of the youngest crocheters in the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day movement.
Sitting with yarn in her hands and a scarf slowly taking shape, the 10-year-old spoke about how crocheting has become much more than just a hobby.

“I’ve never really found my passion for what I’ve done, but I’ve really found something that I do like.”
Although she is still young, Kate has already crocheted between 67 and 90 items, and has no intention of slowing down.
“I want to do another million. I’ve done about nine items, but in total I’ve crocheted about three so far.”
Just a few seats away was Colleen Wilson, the oldest crocheter in the group at 90 years old.
While Kate is only beginning her journey, Wilson has spent years using her knitting needles and crochet hooks to make a difference.
She has been part of the 67 Blankets movement for 12 years and says the friendships and sense of purpose have kept her coming back.

When asked what she enjoys most about being part of the initiative, Wilson’s answer was simple. “I enjoy supporting and encouraging.”
Despite the generations that separate them, Kate and Wilson are united by the same passion: Using their skills to bring warmth and comfort to others.
Denise Brennan, one of the ambassadors of the global movement, said she was impressed with how the community came to support the initiative.
“We have had first timers who also came to test their skills and so far, they are doing good. We appreciate their efforts and taking the time to join us.”
