Learners honour Mandela’s legacy through acts of kindness at Witkoppen Clinic
Dainfern College learners honoured Nelson Mandela’s legacy by bringing comfort and smiles through simple acts of kindness for Mandela Day.
To honour the spirit of Mandela Day (July 18), learners from Dainfern College visited Witkoppen Clinic on July 17 to share tea, sandwiches and fruit with patients and their families, hoping to brighten their day through simple acts of kindness.
The initiative was inspired by the legacy of former president Nelson Mandela and his belief in serving others.
Kaide Nel, a teacher from the school, said the day was about teaching learners the values Mandela stood for.

“We want to celebrate all the wonderful things Mandela did for our country and how he set the standard for us on how to treat people and how to behave.
“It is really nice for our children to come and see how much they have, to be grateful for what they have and to show that they can treat people really well. At our school, they treat every member of staff really well, and it is nice for them to come out and show how other people should be treated.”
The learners prepared sandwiches, made tea and gave out fruit to the people waiting at the clinic.
For many of the learners, the experience left a lasting impression.
Learner Muvuledzi Tshifularo said the highlight of the day was being able to help people.
“I enjoyed that we got to hand out sandwiches, tea and fruit to people who don’t really eat a lot of meals.”
Amber Badenhorst, another learner, said seeing people’s reactions made the experience especially meaningful.

“It’s going well. We’ve seen a lot of people’s moods change, and that’s very heartwarming to see. If they’re happy, it makes me happy as well.
“Their reactions changed from sad to happy, and some stayed sad, which is fine because something is obviously happening in their lives.”
Asked whether they would take part again, Muvuledzi responded without hesitation.
“Oh, I would definitely do it again. I’ll do it for 10 years in a row.”
