Empowerment event urges Diepsloot women to believe in their power
Women in Diepsloot were encouraged to invest in themselves, embrace learning, and recognise their potential during a Women’s Day career guidance event hosted by HWSETA.
Women in Diepsloot were reminded that empowerment starts with believing in themselves and taking every opportunity to grow during a Women’s Day event held on August 14.
The event, hosted by the Health and Welfare Sector Education and Training Authority (HWSETA) in partnership with the Diepsloot Youth Programme (DYP), brought women together at the Tlhabalogo Opportunity Centre for a day focused on skills development, education, and career opportunities.

Among those sharing their experiences was HWSETA beneficiary Tintswalo Mathebula, who opened up about her journey into human resources (HR) and how the organisation played an important role in helping her build her career.
“I wanted to study journalism but had no clue about funding, so I got a job as a security guard at an institution. The admin lady asked why am I working and not a student there. She then helped me to apply for HR as they didn’t have journalism.
“Through hard work and perseverance, I passed well and continued to volunteer where I can. That’s when I got to meet with HWSETA and how it helped to find me. I’ll forever be greatful.”
Motivational speaker Molele Zwane, from SYKED, also encouraged women at the event to recognise their own abilities, while sharing her personal story.

“The powerful motto I want to leave you with is, ‘I am, I have, I can’, it will help encourage you to focus on who you are, what you possess, and what you are capable of achieving.”
Zwane’s message resonated with the purpose of the event, which aimed to expose women to opportunities that could assist them in developing their skills and pursuing meaningful careers.
Busisiwe Mapeka, from the South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO), attended the event with a willingness to learn and grow. Mapeka said she came to the event to gain more knowledge, emphasising that there is always something new to learn.
The event provided women with an opportunity to listen to personal experiences, gain career guidance, and learn about opportunities available through skills development.
For women in communities such as Diepsloot, access to information and opportunities can be an important step towards building confidence and creating new possibilities.
