Could the smell of fresh paint finally signal the end of Sunninghill’s faded road markings, or will the new lines disappear as quickly as the old ones?

On Thursday, Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) teams worked at the intersection of Tudor Avenue and Spitfire Street in Sunninghill, laying down fresh road markings after residents and councillors raised concerns about faded lines across the city. For Ward 93 councillor Vino Reddy, seeing the fresh paint on the road was a welcome sight. However, while the new markings brought relief, they also raised an old question: how long will they last?

“I’m actually very happy because this intersection, amongst others, have had such faded road markings,” Reddy said. “You don’t know if it’s one-way roads or where there’s stops or anything.”

Residents have long called for proper road markings, making the work a welcome development. However, Reddy said his concern now was whether the fresh paint would remain visible. “This is really a step in the right direction, but I hope that the paint used is the long-term, long-lasting road paint, because previously, within days, the paint faded off, and you can barely notice any road markings.”

Reddy said he had previously raised the issue of paint quality with the roads agency. According to him, JRA indicated that it relied on suppliers to provide the required paint. “As much as that is true, we also need to test it and make sure that we’re getting the right quality.”

JRA recently confirmed to the publication that it was awaiting a delivery of paint before continuing with road-marking work. This followed similar concerns raised by Ward 94 councillor David Foley about faded road markings. With the work now under way, Reddy said he hoped JRA had got it right this time.
