Schools in Fourways and Douglasdale celebrate Heritage Day

Schools across the north celebrated Heritage Day by helping young learners explore culture, diversity and unique community traditions.

Learners at Fourways Junior College marked Heritage Day with a colourful fashion parade, showcasing outfits representing their cultures and traditions.

Principal Aimee Shaw said the celebration gave children an opportunity to understand and appreciate their heritage from an early age. “Every family, culture, language and tradition has value. We wanted the children to feel proud of who they are while also learning to appreciate and respect the people around them.”

The school also recognised its helpers with Maureen’s Marvellous Master Cooking Class. Teacher Maureen Raseroka, who has been part of the school community for 16 years, taught the helpers how to prepare her famous meatballs before they sat down to enjoy the meal together.

Meanwhile, learners at Little Earth Kids Montessori in Douglasdale embarked on an ‘Around the World in One Day’ journey, with each class representing a different continent or country.

The Dancing Sunflowers represented Asia, Bouncing Bonsai celebrated Europe, Belugas represented South Africa, Meadows brought North American cowboy culture to life, Willows explored South America, and Baobabs represented Oceania.

Principal Jenny de Kock said the celebration was designed to make learning about the world an engaging experience for the children. The learners explored different cultures through colourful costumes, finger foods, songs, stories and fun facts, turning the school into a vibrant celebration of global diversity.

For Little Earth Kids, the day was about showing children that heritage extends beyond where they come from and includes the ways people connect and learn from one another.

Both schools placed children at the heart of their celebrations, using Heritage Day as an opportunity to teach respect, curiosity and appreciation for differences.
