Sunninghill residents wait for Tiati Road stormwater drain repairs
Joburg Water burst pipe repairs damaged local infrastructure a year ago, but administrative delays between municipal entities have left reinstatement work pending.
Sunninghill residents face ongoing delays as a damaged stormwater drain on Tiati Road remains unrepaired, despite assurances from the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) that work would proceed.
Tracy Kensey of the Sunninghill Community Ratepayers and Association revisited the site to highlight the outstanding repairs and question why the affected infrastructure was still not reinstated.

She said the damage occurred about a year ago and recalled that the JRA had previously indicated that repairs would be completed within a month.
“We are now sitting in October, and we’re still waiting for this to be reinstated,” she said.
Inter-entity paperwork causes delay
Johannesburg Water spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala said, “Johannesburg Water is aware of the damaged stormwater drain on Tiati Road, Sunninghill. “And yes, the entity confirms that the stormwater drain was damaged during burst pipe repairs by Johannesburg Water.”
She added that a work order had since been issued to the JRA.
However, the JRA’s latest response indicates that the reinstatement process has not been finalised.

The JRA’s acting head of department for regional operations, Mpho Maruping, said the agency and Johannesburg Water were in the process of finalising the documentation relating to the reinstatement.
“We are dealing with a backlog of reinstatements; unfortunately our programme was delayed,” Maruping said.
He said they anticipate starting the work from October 19, 2026.
The continued delay has left residents seeking clarity on whether site preparation has started and when the damaged section will be fully reinstated.
Although Johannesburg Water has confirmed that a works order was issued, JRA’s response points to outstanding documentation between the entities as part of the process still being finalised.
