School for the underprivileged ransacked

DOUGLASDALE - Two suspects were arrested for housebreaking and possession of stolen goods after they allegedly ransacked a school for the underprivileged.

Warrant Officer Balan Muthan, head of communication at the Douglasdale police station, said the suspects were arrested on 8 August for possession of stolen property.

“A victim later opened up a case of house robbery and was able to positively identify the property as hers, and so the two cases were joined,” Muthan said.

Helen de Kock, headmistress of Vuleka Primary School in North Riding, said this was not the first time the school had been robbed. “The night before the robbery we had just finished fixing our bathrooms from the previous robbery. We had spent R49 000 and the next day all our sinks were bashed in again,” said de Kock.

Muthan said the suspects ripped the taps from the sinks and would then sell them.

De Kock said she was informed about the robbery at the school on her way to work and called the Douglasdale police station. “They were there within minutes of me phoning them. The officers were professional and marvellous. I can not sing their praises loud enough,” she said.

Muthan said they were extremely proud of the officers involved in the investigation and arrests.

De Kock said goods stolen from the school included sports uniforms which had been donated to them, sports equipment, brooms and other cleaning appliances. Muthan said the suspects were probably linked to other house robberies with the same modus operandi.
