In response to requests from residents and investors, they are building raised sidewalks and crossings on each side of the busy roadway for cyclists and pedestrians.
The dedicated lanes will stretch from Mulbarton Street to the Erling Street interchange. Since William Nicol is a major route for commuters, their safety is a priority, said Steyn City Properties CEO Giuseppe Plumari.
“Increasing demand on Johannesburg’s urban roads has resulted in traffic congestion, and an increase in the number of traffic accidents, many involving pedestrians and cyclists. As developers, we need to improve road infrastructure.”
The upgrade includes the extension of Erling Road eastwards towards Main Road. Estimated to reach completion in April 2014, the upgrade will transform William Nicol Drive into a four-lane dual carriageway from Mulbarton Street to Erling Street, with future plans to extend it to the N14.
“Partnering with the state for these upgrades, and contributing to servicing of neighbouring developments, is an important part of our mandate. We want Steyn City to bring benefits to many stakeholders in the area, including commuters and cyclists,” Plumari said.
