Claws out over cats

FOURWAYS - Feral cat colony at Leaping Frog Centre will be removed

Tenants at Leaping Frog Centre in Beverley are likely to have the last word over the feral cat colony at the strip mall.

According to spokesperson Marjike Arran, she discussed the matter with the landlord and the following came to light.

“The cats have become a problem for some of our tenants, and the centre has had to take a stand to try and deal with the situation.”

Arran said the centre was not housing for abandoned animals.

“The landlord and tenants feel there is a health risk associated with cats, and the Health Department is also being called out to assist with this situation,” she said.

Chairman for the National Cat Action Taskforce Anneke Malan had a list of gripes over the cats. One of the main concerns was that maintained feral cat colonies, which have been sterilised and are being fed, shouldn’t be removed.

“Research has shown that, should these cats be removed, new, unsterilised cats will simply take their place within a short period,” Malan said.

Malan hopes the cats will be able to stay at the centre and lists the National Council of SPCAs which recommended that public institutions should maintain colonies of feral cats, which were under managed feeding and were sterilised.

“Feeding ensures that cats remain fit and healthy enough to fulfil their function, namely keeping rodents and snakes in check,” she said.

Arran said the centre had been fortunate not to have issues with pests such as rodents, adding that pest control services were in place if the cats were to be removed.

She also ensured that their removal will be at the detriment to the cats lives, and alternative plans will be made.
