MAGALIESSIG - A ventriloquist, a woman, a doctor and a couple of Goliaths walk into a bar…
What sounds like the start of a bad joke is actually a true account of the nominee announcement ceremony for the 2013 Comics Choice Awards at Joe Parker’s Comedy and Jive on 17 July.
The third awards ceremony saw another growth spurt
The short ceremony was marked with much frivolity, as John Vlismas noted.
According to him the third awards ceremony saw another growth spurt, with a 26 percent increase of comedians registering for an award.
A total of 85 comedians was registered for the Comic of the Year Award with 13 467 Audience Choice votes received by 14 July.
“It’s now in its third year, officially making it South Africa’s longest-running comedy awards,” Vlismas said.
The awards is his brainchild, which has been able to grow significantly since 2011.
The 2012 awards one of the most interactive shows
Media partners and sponsors made the 2012 awards one of the most interactive shows ever to be staged in South Africa.
He said 2013 will see even more, when an International Stand-Up act joining the Mzansi comedians for the show.
Six of the nominees are in line to win a prestigious Waldo award.

The gold statue, valued at just under R15 000 is the golden cherry on top of bragging rights as a leading comedian in the country.
Loyiso Madinga, Eureka Nkese, Schalk Bezuidenhout and Kagiso Mokgadi are in the running for the Savanna Newcomer Award, while Deep Fried Man, Mpho Popps Modikoane, Donovan Goliath and Jason Goliath are tapping their fingers in anticipation for one of them to be honoured with the BlackBerry Breakthrough Act Award.
Trevor Noah, Loyiso Gola, Tumi Morake and Riaad Moosa each received a nod for the Comic Of The Year Award.
The Times Comic’s Pen Award will see Chester Missing, Loyiso Gola, Kagiso Lediga or Rob van Vuuren honoured with their writing wit.
The Savanna Audience Choice Award is anyone’s game on the other hand. Mashabela Galane, Sifiso Nene, Thapelo TIPS Seemise and Khanyisa Bunu is still in the running, with the public able to vote for their favourite until 20 July.
Barry Hilton walking away with the Lifetime Achievement Waldo. He received the highest number of votes from his peers for his 25 years’ experience in the industry
The sixth award was announced on the day, with Barry Hilton walking away with the Lifetime Achievement Waldo. He received the highest number of votes from his peers for his 25 years’ experience in the industry.
A tearful Hilton said he had worked his whole life for this kind of recognition.
But his glory moment might be a tad overwhelming as he receives the Grilling of a Lifetime on 13 August where he’ll be subjected to comedic insults, praise and downright abuse from his fellow funnymen.
