River Rangers: Eyes and ears of community

PAULSHOF - Rivonia Riding Club's River Rangers are proving that active citizenship helps solve problems in Paulshof and surrounding areas.

The rangers have already patrolled 144 times this year, an increase from 128 in July last year. They patrol Paulshof, Petervale, Rivonia, Bryanston, Sunninghill and Leeuwkop Prison Grounds.

The rangers report crime and municipal problems and were successful in reporting and fixing two leaks in Paulshof in July. The first was a waterpipe leak in Brackenhill Park in Paulshof and the second was cooking oil that was dumped into the Sandspruit River.

The rangers have found vagrants have returned to the K60 road reserve, a source of complaint for Paulshof central and Extension 10 residents as well, with litter among the trees by the river and scattered broken glass in the road reserve.

Vagrants were also seen on the Sandspruit River banks at the end of Achter Road and evidence of small fires, suspected to be used for cooking, were found in the field at the end of Achter Road. Lauren Hegele of the River Rangers committee said the police and security company Imvula Quality Protection were notified.

The rangers also found that animal snaring was still evident in Paulshof, following reports of animal trapping along the Braamfontein Spruit in Paulshof earlier this year, as the rangers found another animal snare in the bushes by the spruit in July.
