Local artists raise the bar
JOBURG - The entries for this year's Sasol New Signatures art competition raised the bar from previous competitions with some notable entries.
Submitted works showed artists were not afraid to experiment with new media and multiple modes of expression.
“We saw an increase in submissions that reflect people’s personal experiences and bring pertinent social, economic, political and psychological issues to the fore. With the awards ceremony steadily approaching, the judges have their work cut out for them as they choose the winning piece from a pool of 97 artworks,” said competition selection panel national chairperson Peter Binsbergen.
For 24 years, Sasol in partnership with the Association of Arts Pretoria played an influential role in placing the spotlight on South African artistic talent through the competition. The competition grew in popularity and prestige as the quality of works submitted improved significantly.
Almost 450 entries were received this year, and 97 were shortlisted for final judging; an increase from last year’s 88 shortlisted entries.
The overall winner will receive R60 000 and an opportunity to host a solo exhibition at the Pretoria Arts Museum next year. The runner-up and five merit award recipients will receive R20 000 and R5 000 respectively.
Winners will be announced on 28 August at the Pretoria Art Museum, and the competition exhibition will run from 29 August until 13 October. Last year’s winner, Ingrid Bolton, will also exhibit her works during this time.
“The competition aims to inspire creativity among emerging artists while increasing South Africa’s appreciation for the art. We encourage all finalists to extend their craft and contribute toward the improvement of the state of art in South Africa,” said Sasol sponsorship manager Richard Hughes.
