House robbery suspect arrested after car chase

DOUGLASDALE - Douglasdale police arrested one suspect and recovered three stolen vehicles, one a rental car, and stolen goods during an operation conducted in Lonehill.

According to Warrant Officer Balan Muthan, communications officer at the Douglasdale police station, police received a call from C Track asking for their assistance on 15 August. The tracking company had tracked a vehicle that was stolen in Edenvale, to a complex on Sunset Boulevard in Lonehill. “When police arrived at the scene, they scanned the suspected vehicle and saw that it, along with another vehicle, was stolen,” said Muthan. He said police suspect the vehicles were used to commit other crimes. Police also recovered a vehicle that belonged to a car rental company.

Muthan said while police were on the scene, the suspect arrived, but fled when he saw police vehicles. “Police tried to chase the suspect, but failed to catch him.”

On 16 August a security officer from the Lonehill complex spotted the suspect and called the police. “A chase ensued in the Fourways area. Police successfully caught up to the suspect and he was arrested.”

Balan said the suspect had already been linked to a hijacking and numerous house robberies within Fourways and Edenvale. TVs, computers, speakers, keys, jewellery and other stolen goods were recovered.

Reggie Naidoo, one of the victims whose car was recovered said his home was robbed. “I was on holiday but my tenant called to say there had been a robbery and the car was gone.” He said when he arrived at his Edenvale home, he notice that the suspects had crashed into his gate. “The house is a mess,” he said.

Naidoo said his car had been smashed and the criminals had ripped open his dashboard in search of a tracking device.

Muthan said the suspect was also linked to the hijacking of a woman motorist.
