Rugby legends coach Diepsloot youth

Suncares Rugby Development Academy held a rugby clinic for the youth of Diepsloot led by former Springbok rugby players.

A total of 150 boys from Diepsloot and trainee coaches of Muzomuhle and Reshomile primary schools experienced a once in a lifetime chance to learn from rugby legends, Gerrie Germishuys, Ian McIntosh, Krynauw Otto and Mac Masina.

The legends certainly put the boys through their paces at the Bophelong sports ground in Diepsloot.

Project manager of the academy, Thoriso Shihau said they had specifically chosen to introduce rugby in Diepsloot because it was a sport that was relatively foreign to the community.

He said, “There has been a move towards including young black players in the national team and that type of transformation starts with young boys from communities like Diepsloot.”

Shihau said the academy did not just teach rugby skills, but also taught the boys life skills, discipline and respect.

“We’re not just creating the next Springbok, but also the next great man,” he said.
