Why the E-toll boss quit

Johannesburg- Salahdin Yacoubi, CEO of Electronic Tolling Collection (ETC), the company responsible for Gauteng's contentious e-toll project, resigned due to personal reasons.

Yacoubi was at the helm of Electronic Tolling Collection since 2009, when it was established with the sole purpose of delivering services contracted by the South African National Roads Agency.

The roads agency confirmed Yacoubi’s resignation but added that it would not impact on the agency’s working relationship with the tolling company.

“The South African National Roads Agency has a contract with ETC and the resignation of its CEO has no impact on that contract. The work ETC is doing for the roads agency will continue,” said Vusi Mona, general manager of communications at the roads agency.

Meanwhile, Electronic Tolling Company named Jamie Surkont as its new CEO. Surkont, who is a finance, operations and business development professional with extensive experience in contracting environments, took the ranks at Electronic Tolling Collection after Salahdin Yacoubi resigned on 31 October with immediate effect.

Surkont has a vast knowledge of the South African tolling environment and led the business development and tender process for the Kapsch/TMT consortium. Kapsch is the majority owner of Electronic Tolling Collection.

Surkont could not be reached for comment.
