Domestic workers’ summit to be held
JOBURG - A summit aimed to address challenges facing domestic workers and their employers will be held at the Turffontein Race Course on 17 November in Johannesburg South.
Domestic workers’ Stakeholders representative Daisy Mashego said the organisation has invited the Department of Labour and the Commission for Conciliation and Mediation and Arbitration (CMMA), including Seta services, to engage with domestic workers and address various issues in order to make their [domestic workers’] work environment conducive to fairness, as well as to find ways to improve relationships between workers and their employers.
“We also invite domestic workers’ employers to attend the event and grasp knowledge on how to build better relationships with their workers. The CCMA and Department of Labour will be sharing information on the rights of the employer and employee,” she said.
Mashego said Setas have been roped in to train domestic workers in relevant fields, however, only a few workers had since been trained, and the summit would afford them an opportunity to explain the reasons.
She said they also invited the Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane and the housing department.
“We want government to provide houses to domestic workers. Many of the workers don’t know the right channels and we want government to share information regarding that.”
Mashego said they hoped to host the summit annually throughout the province.
