Fighter urges men to get checked
SUNNINGHILL - EFC Africa Middleweight champion, Garreth 'Soldier Boy' McLellan pledged his support to the Movember campaign by growing his famous beard.
He encouraged men to go for regular check-ups for prostate and testicular cancer.
McLellan started mixed martial arts after a career in rugby in KwaZulu-Natal. He turned professional in 2008 and started competing in EFC Africa events in 2009. He quickly built a reputation for being a determined and dedicated fighter in the hexagon, while being a true gentleman outside of it, earning the respect of opponents and fans alike.
McLellan has always championed the cause of keeping your mind and body healthy but decided to get involved with Movember to raise awareness of prostate and testicular cancer. The fighter didn’t just grow his facial hair to support the cause but also visited his doctor for a check-up to demonstrate how easy, yet necessary the process was for all men.
He said, “Men don’t like to admit that something’s wrong and therefore won’t go for regular check-ups but its extremely important to be aware and look after your body and your mind.”
McLellan added that he wanted to show men that they should not be scared to go for regular check-ups because not knowing your health status could be deadly.
“No one can say that they’re not scared of being sick but I’d rather know and deal with it now than not know until its too late,” he said.
