Bringing light to the pupils of Mother Touch Academy
DIEPSLOOT- The Jewish community of Fourways made a very special donation to the children of Mother Touch Academy, outside Diepsloot.
Rabbi Rabin of the Chabad of Fourways explained that the idea for the donation came last year during Hannukah.
“Hannukah is known as the festival of lights and during this festival we try to bring light into the world, especially for the less fortunate,” he said.
When looking for a deserving recipient to donate their collection of toys, clothes and healthy food to, they had no further to look than Mother Touch Academy.
Since 2009 Mother Touch Academy has been both an educational and care facility for the young children of Diepsloot. The school prides itself on giving their pupils a quality education as well as two square meals a day, with much of their produce coming from their on-site vegetable garden. For many of the children at the school the two meals they receive during their school day are their only meals for the day.
Chairperson of Mother Touch, Seugnelle Visser explained that even though many parents can not afford to contribute school fees, they are encouraged to support the school in other ways, like helping in the kitchen and garden. The school day at the Academy runs from 6 am to 6 pm, with parents fetching their children when they are able to.
Rabbin Rabin said, “This is the first time we’ve donated to Mother’s Touch but we are hoping to start a good relationship of giving and sharing with the school.”
