Teamwork saves Durban Deep pups
CHARTWELL- Ark Animal Centre helped fellow animal welfare organisation, Community Led Animal Welfare (CLAW) by housing some of their dogs and puppies who were in danger of being harmed during the Durban Deep service delivery protests in Roodepoort.
CLAW provides desperately needed veterinary services to dogs and cats, as well as vital animal care education to pet owners in some of the world’s most disadvantaged communities. Their Johannesburg branch is based in Roodepoort.
The protests at Durban Deep became particularly violent last week with gun shots fired, stones thrown and the burning of tyres and tree trunks.
Ark Animal Centre received a call from Jennifer Gerner of CLAW asking them to take in some of their puppies – as protests in the area were getting so violent that they feared for the safety of the animals housed at their facility. Tracy Otto, manager at Ark Animal Centre, agreed without hesitation.
CLAW members transporting the dogs and puppies to the Ark Animal Centre had to manoeuvre through debris and burning barricades on the roads of Durban Deep.
Eventually fifteen very confused puppies and dogs arrived at Ark Animal Centre.
Candice Eilertsen of Ark Animal Centre said, “It was like a scene out of a wild west movie but thankfully no pups were harmed and they have settled in beautifully at the centre.”
