Hot opportunity for students
FOURWAYS - Solar geyser manufacturer Clean Heat in Lanseria has set up an academy to give young people skills in plumbing and solar water heating technology.
The critical skills shortage in the industry inspired the idea of setting up the training establishment. The first programme which hosted a class of 50 young people, began in January and has an advanced curriculum which gives individuals from less fortunate communities an upper hand in the fast-growing business.
The programme is a one year course, with theoretical and practical training done at their Lanseria offices, while plumbing includes onsite training in Lenasia and Eldorado Park.
The training deals with the two primary qualifications for solar heating systems and plumbing which extends from theoretical knowledge to simulated practicals in a fully equipped workshop built on the premises, giving them the technical knowledge to excel in the real world.
But though the primary qualifications are solar heating systems and plumbing, students are exposed to other aspects of business with a curriculum widening its scope to communications and mathematics.
With a Construction Education and Training Authority approved curriculum the company has developed a registered Further Education and Training college in Soweto to help young people.
The course is funded by Construction Education and Training Authority (CETA) and the learners get a monthly allowance R 1 500 in form of a stipend.
