Comments on Heronbridge strike divided
FOURWAYS - The HeronBridge strike has entered its seventh day with workers at HeronBridge estate calling for higher pay and better treatment.
But the response from readers on social media platforms has been greatly divided on the issues.
A number of readers have commented on the Fourways Review Facebook page and website expressing anger towards the HeronBridge strikers.
One reader was concerned about the safety of HeronBridge pupils and said, “Pretty irresponsible to be holding the protest in front of the school entrance. Nearly saw a crash yesterday. There are children… trying to get in.”
Another reader expressed anger towards the strikers, touching on the racial and political aspects surrounding the story and said, “Fire the lot of those ungrateful misfits, thousands of whites would appreciate their jobs and R3 600 a month. HeronBridge isn’t Zumaville nor does it hand out free grants for everything.”
The racial issues surrounding the story had arguments from both sides. A supporter of the strike said, “HeronBridge must stop treating people like slaves. Working 12 hours a day, seven days a week and month-end you get a salary of R3 600 because you are black. But whites get three times [the] salary of blacks because of the colour of their skin.
“I only see my sister once a year because she doesn’t get enough money nor time to come and see us [from] KwaZulu-Natal. I don’t even have a school jersey because she can’t afford [it], [but] Mr David Tomlinson is getting richer and richer.
“Maybe they must not call HeronBridge a Christian school because it’s clear that they don’t know what Christianity means. HeronBridge school of slavery or HeronBridge school of racism will suit them.”The HeronBridge strikers have said that they will strike until their demands for higher pay are met. HeronBridge Estate has offered them a 12 percent increase but they have not accepted.
