Great fun in cook-off for Cub Scouts
JOBURG - Cub Scouts from the Sandton District, participated in their own version of Master Chef by holding a cooking competition at Delta Park.
The theme chosen for the event was Out of Africa, with boys and girls from the 1st Bryanston, 1st Morningside, 1st Parkmore and 1st Peter Place Cub packs attending.
Teams of four to six Cubs were challenged to prepare and cook a three-course meal, including a beverage, over an open fire. Alternative cooking methods, such as solar cookers and hay boxes were also encouraged.
Cubs were expected to prepare a menu, decorate and lay a table according to their chosen theme, and then serve their culinary creation to a panel of three judges. According to Marion Halstead, one of the judges, “the food was very tasty and the efforts taken by the Cubs to decorate their tables and dress according to their theme, was impressive”.
The morning was a great learning experience for all who participated.
1st Parkmore, with a Moroccan-inspired menu and -setting were judged the overall winners.
Cubs is the junior branch of the Scout movement, and caters for both boys and girls in the seven to 10 age group. One Cub said that being a Cub is fun and exciting, and you get to learn new things and make new friends.
